Membership platform comparison

Patreon vs Ko-fi vs Buy Me a Coffee Fees

An exact membership-fee comparison needs the complete, current transaction terms for every platform. This page calculates only Patreon because that condition was met; it names the exclusions rather than filling gaps with estimates.

By Creator Revenue Calculator

A comparison is only as exact as its inputs

Patreon’s Creator fees overview provides the needed terms for the stated scenario: Standard has a 10% platform fee, and USD US PayPal or Venmo processing is 2.9% plus $0.30 per payment. That supports a reproducible Patreon example. It does not establish terms for a different platform.

Ko-fi and Buy Me a Coffee are excluded from the exact transaction comparison because official sources reviewed on October 24, 2026 did not permit exact transaction-fee verification for a like-for-like membership calculation. A platform-fee headline is not enough when a keep amount also depends on payment processing, payment method, country, currency, tax treatment, or an account plan. Presenting invented decimals as a comparison would be less useful than showing an explicit exclusion.

This is not a conclusion that either excluded service is more expensive or less expensive. It is a scope limit. Creators can obtain the current terms that apply to their account and compare them directly. If a platform publishes sufficiently specific official terms later, a revised comparison can state the exact assumptions and use the same arithmetic discipline.

Patreon: identical $10 memberships

Synthetic arithmetic examples, not a benchmark: hold the membership price at $10, use Standard and USD US PayPal or Venmo for every payment, and exclude conditional charges and payout transaction fees. Per payment, the platform fee is $1.00 and processing is $0.59, totaling $1.59. The modeled net is $8.41.

Gross membership revenueMembershipsPlatform feesProcessing feesTotal feesModeled net
$500.0050 at $10$50.00$29.50$79.50$420.50
$2,000.00200 at $10$200.00$118.00$318.00$1,682.00

For the $500 scenario: 50 multiplied by $10 equals $500 gross; 50 multiplied by $1.59 equals $79.50 fees; $500 minus $79.50 equals $420.50 net. For the $2,000 scenario: 200 multiplied by $1.59 equals $318 fees; $2,000 minus $318 equals $1,682. These examples scale a per-payment charge, not a percentage of the total balance.

The distinction is important. Computing processing once on $500 would omit forty-nine fixed processing amounts. Computing it once on $2,000 would omit one hundred ninety-nine. The calculator models each entered tier price and patron count accordingly. Open the Patreon revenue calculator to change the payment profile or combine tiers rather than applying this one example to every page.

What “actually keep” can mean

“Keep” can mean a remainder after payment fees, a Patreon balance before withdrawal, the cash sent by a payout method, or a business result after taxes and costs. This article uses the narrowest meaning: gross membership payments minus the two stated per-payment Patreon charges. It does not claim that the model is take-home income.

Patreon documents payout transaction fees separately from membership-payment fees, and documents conditional currency conversion, tax on creator fees, refunds, and iOS treatment. A creator who needs a monthly cash reconciliation should use actual records and the Patreon payout reconciliation guide. The tracker guide supplies the exact category structure for that process.

Fair comparison also means holding the unit constant. Compare a membership payment with a membership payment, choose the same currency where possible, state whether prices include tax, and say whether a payout charge is included. A table that mixes donation, shop, membership, and payout charges can appear precise while answering no single creator question.

FAQ

Why are Ko-fi and Buy Me a Coffee excluded from the exact comparison?

Their official sources did not permit exact transaction-fee verification for a like-for-like membership calculation on the checked date, so this page does not invent a keep amount.

Does the Patreon scenario include every possible fee?

No. It includes only the stated Standard-plan platform fee and USD US PayPal or Venmo processing. Conditional fees and payout fees are excluded.

For actual records, download the blank Patreon income tracker CSV and compare the stated scenario with your own current payout data.
