Count only episodes included in this monthly scenario.
Use a documented CPM or a deliberate scenario. The same entered CPM applies to each selected ad slot.
Use the retained share in your hosting, network, or sales agreement.
Enter the net amount for completed sponsor work in this reporting period, using your usual accounting basis consistently. Do not also include the same placement in the ad-inventory lines.

How the podcast revenue scenario works

Podcast advertising is often planned from eligible downloads per episode rather than total lifetime downloads. This calculator reports pre-roll, mid-roll, and post-roll inventory separately but applies the same CPM you enter to each selected slot. Each advertising line uses downloads per episode ÷ 1,000 × your CPM × that placement's slots × episodes per month × your creator share. Completed net direct-sponsor revenue is entered as a monthly amount and added directly.

No hidden placement multiplier

The calculator does not assign a premium or discount to pre-roll, mid-roll, or post-roll inventory. If your agreement sets different prices by placement, run separate scenarios or enter a documented blended CPM. Every quantity and rate starts at zero. The completed sponsor line does not infer placements from downloads or CPM.

Worked example

A show with 5,000 eligible downloads per episode and four episodes per month enters a $25 blended CPM, a 75% creator share, one pre-roll, and one mid-roll. The modeled monthly ad inventory is $750: 5 × $25 × 2 slots × 4 episodes × 0.75. With completed direct-sponsor revenue left at zero, the calculator adds no sponsorship revenue.

How much do podcasts make per 1,000 downloads?

There is no single podcast RPM. Placement, format, audience geography, niche, campaign targeting, host endorsement, sell-through, make-goods, and whether the sale is direct or programmatic all change the result. Use the CPM from an actual insertion order or marketplace offer when available.

How many downloads do you need to monetize?

Every network and sponsor sets its own eligibility rules. Smaller shows may monetize through memberships, affiliate offers, services, live events, or a direct local sponsor before they qualify for a large ad marketplace. Spotify also makes different monetization options available by country, hosting arrangement, published-episode count, and recent audience activity.

How do podcasters make money besides ads?

Common alternatives include paid subscriptions, listener memberships, premium feeds, affiliate relationships, courses, consulting, merchandise, and live events. Track each stream separately so recurring subscription revenue is not confused with one-time sponsorship or affiliate income.

Primary sources

Limitations

The output does not predict sell-through, dynamic insertion eligibility, skipped ads, make-goods, regional pricing, taxes, refunds, payment processing, exclusivity, production cost, or contract minimums. It includes only the completed sponsor amount you enter and cannot detect duplicate revenue entered in two lines. Use this as a scenario builder and compare a potential host-read deal with the sponsorship rate calculator.
