How Much Does Patreon Take? Fees With Examples

On the current Standard plan, the visible platform percentage is only part of a USD membership payment. In the stated US PayPal scenario, a ten-percent platform fee and a per-payment processing fee both reduce the remainder.

By Creator Revenue Calculator

The short answer is not just ten percent

Patreon’s Creator fees overview says pages published after August 4, 2025 use the Standard platform plan at 10% of the payment excluding sales tax. The same source lists USD processing for US PayPal or Venmo as 2.9% plus $0.30. This article deliberately uses that one profile so every number is inspectable; it is not an average of a creator’s members.

The useful question is therefore “what remains after the stated fees on one payment?” rather than “what is the headline platform percentage?” The fixed processing amount has the same dollar value on each payment in this example. That makes its percentage effect more noticeable on a lower-priced tier.

Use the Patreon revenue calculator when your actual tier mix, payment profile, or plan differs. It exposes the selected assumptions rather than guessing about your account. Once payments have occurred, use the Patreon income tracker guide and Patreon records instead of treating this scenario as a statement.

Worked USD examples

The calculations below assume Standard, USD payout currency, and US PayPal or Venmo. Platform fee equals price multiplied by 10%. Processing equals price multiplied by 2.9%, plus $0.30. Total fee is platform fee plus processing; net is price minus total fee. The calculator calculates per payment before display rounding.

TierPlatformProcessingTotal feeNet
$5.00$0.50$0.445$0.945$4.055, shown as $4.06
$10.00$1.00$0.59$1.59$8.41
$25.00$2.50$1.025$3.525$21.475, shown as $21.48

Synthetic arithmetic examples, not a benchmark: $5.00 minus $0.50 minus $0.445 equals $4.055; $10.00 minus $1.00 minus $0.59 equals $8.41; and $25.00 minus $2.50 minus $1.025 equals $21.475. The displayed cents are rounded for readability, while the underlying calculation retains the stated precision.

At $5, the fixed $0.30 is six percent of the payment before adding the percentage processing portion. At $25, it is 1.2 percent before that percentage portion. That is the reason “Patreon takes ten percent” understates the modeled total at smaller prices. It does not mean every payment receives these exact charges: a non-US PayPal or Venmo payment, a card payment, tax-inclusive processing, or a different plan changes the inputs.

What this model includes and excludes

The source says payment processing varies by member payment method, location, and creator payout currency. It also documents conditional currency conversion, taxes on creator fees, payout transaction fees, refunds, and iOS purchase treatment. Those charges are excluded from these three membership-payment examples because none is determined by the facts stated here.

This distinction matters for planning. A payment fee belongs to an individual successful payment. A payout charge happens when money is transferred from the Patreon balance and is not a per-patron payment fee. A refund can reverse part of a period after the original payment. Combining all of those into one invented “effective rate” would hide the record needed to explain a real payout.

For a decision about new pricing, model several tiers with your own distribution. For a decision about cash received, compare the period, currency, and payout event. The companion article on Patreon patron targets translates the same net-per-patron assumptions into a target count, while the payout reconciliation guide explains the gaps a scenario cannot resolve.

FAQ

How much does Patreon take on the Standard plan?

For this USD, US PayPal or Venmo scenario, Patreon’s 10% platform fee is separate from 2.9% plus $0.30 payment processing. Actual fees can differ with payment method, location, taxes, currency conversion, refunds, and payout method.

Why does the fee share look larger on a $5 tier?

The fixed $0.30 processing part is the same per payment in this scenario, so it occupies more of a smaller membership payment.
